GREEK PLANETS: 9th century BC
In the 9th century BC, the Greeks learn to
differentiate between the stars and planets and gave
the planets names. Mercury was the twinkling star,
Venus was the herald of the dawn since it appeared in
the early morning hours, Mars was the fiery star,
Jupiter was the luminous star, and Saturn was the
brilliant star. The Greeks thought that there was a
sixth planet which appeared in the evening (they
called it Vespertine). They didn't realize that Venus
appeared sometimes in the evenings.
